    Learning Outcomes


    • After the successful completion of the course, students should be able to:
    • Know the basic principles and sources of the International, European and National Law
    • Know the current trends of Policies and legislation pertaining to the Coastal Zone
    • Understand the relationships between the environmental and socio-economic needs and the development of policy and legislation
    • Know the basic regulation instruments associated with the coastal zone protection and management
    • Identify and analyze the legal framework related to the management of the coastal zone risks

    (3) Syllabus


    The course includes the following topics:


    1. Sources of International Law and International Conventions.
    2. The legal dimension of the European Union: Legal framework and instruments. Implementation.
    3. Marine resources and Environmental Law. Maritime zones. The 1982 UNCLOS.
    4. Greek coastal zone and regulation I: Current and emerging policy and regulation for the sustainable development of the coastal zone
    5. Greek coastal zone and regulation ΙΙ: International Law. The Barcelona Convention (1995) the CBD Convention (1992), MARPOL 73/78, Convention for the protection from oil pollution (OPRC 1990, CLC 1992, IOPC Fund Convention 1992 BUNKER 2001 Convention). European Law Directives 2000/60/ΕΚ, 2008 2008/56/EΚ, 2014/89/EU)
    6. Greek coastal zone and regulation ΙΙI: Policies and regulation fro Climate Change adaptation. Coastal erosion. The 2008 ICZM Protocol to the Barcelona Convention. Directives 2007/60/ΕΚ και 2014/52/ΕΕ.
    7. Allotment of Essays and relevant guidelines
    8 - 12. Seminars presenting the essays (each student team)
    13. Final essay presentation (examination)
