Ph.D. studies

The Department of Marine Sciences offers a three-year program leading to an internationally recognised degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Oceanography. The PhD degree is awarded to candidates with proven ability to carry out independent research through the submission of a thesis containing an account of the successful original study of a scientific problem. A Ph.D. degree is primarily awarded for producing a substantive, independent research thesis under the supervision of a university professor.

Applications for the Doctoral programme are welcomed from qualified candidates wishing to undertake research on a specific topic within one of the Department's broad research areas. It is assumed that before submitting an application for entry to the program, applicants will have done some preparatory work on the proposed topic of study. Admission depends on the quality of the applicant's research proposal and its relevance to the Department's research interests.

Finding a Supervisor

An open Call for Ph.D. applications submission is regularly published in our news & events page. Following the Call's deadlines, best practice for prospective Ph.D. students is to search our web pages for information on the research areas of the Department and the fields of study on offer, and obtain the contact data of suitable academic supervisors. Having identified the key research interests, prospective applicants should be in a position to contact a university professor whom they consider well suited to supervise the thesis.
