Dimitra Kitsiou

Research
Her research interests focus on the development and application of methodologies using modern expertise in the framework of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) for the study of the coastal environment, the quantitative and spatio-temporal assessment of marine eutrophication including the effect of extreme weather events, the circulation of sea water masses, the monitoring of sea water pollution and the estimation of fishing activity. Furthermore, on the development of methodologies and tools for coastal zone management and marine spatial planning, including webGIS applications, by co-estimating data from various sources, such as socio-economic, environmental, satellite, with the objective to support appropriate actions of the involved public bodies. She has participated in many national and international research projects as researcher and scientific coordinator and has offered her services as an international expert in the European Union and other international organizations.
Teaching
Undergraduate level: Geographic Information Systems, GIS applications in the marine environment.
Postgraduate level (MSc Integrated Coastal Management): Geo-informatics with applications in the coastal and marine environment.
She is currently the supervisor of four (4) PhD students.
Professional activities
She has worked as reviewer for international scientific journals (Environmental Management, Hydrobiologia, GNEST, Environment International, The Science of the Total Environment etc) and as external expert evaluator of scientific research projects in EU (FP6-2004-Sustainable development, global change and ecosystems, FP7-2010-ENV.2011.4.1.4-2 Assessing the ecosystem status, including fisheries, within the Mediterranean marine coastal areas of North African countries, EU-Horizon 2020–WATER, EU-Horizon 2020-MSCA-ITN-2016, EU-Horizon 2020-MSCA-IF-2016, EU-Horizon 2020-MSCA-IF-2018) and other inter-governmental organizations (Polish-Norwegian Research Programme (National Centre for Research and Development), Croatian Science Foundation (HRZZ)). She has also worked in many national and international research projects as researcher or scientific coordinator.
