Vassilis Zervakis
Research
While my Ph.D. research focused on near-inertial waves in the ocean, my scientific interests gradually expanded through time to include the interannual variability of the Mediterranean Sea and the role of the exchanges with the Black Sea, small-scale processes and internal waves, air-sea exchanges and physical-biological interactions. Most emphasis has been given to the revelation of the insulating role of the Black Sea Waters in the North Aegean Sea, as well as the analysis of the turbulent diffusion acting in its deep sub-basins during stagnation periods. Current activities include the application of Lagrangian methodologies on oil-spill dispersion studies and the use of a coastal HF radar in the long-term assessment of the Aegean-Black Sea exchanges.
Teaching
My teaching duties in the Department of Marine Sciences of the University of the Aegean include the following undergraduate courses: Descriptive Physical Oceanography, an introductory course to the physics of the ocean and Processing of Oceanographic Data, a course introducing the basic time-series techniques using Matlab/Octave as a tool and a course on dispersion processes in the framework of the course Marine Pollution. At graduate level, I teach a course in Coastal Oceanography and Climate Change at our M.Sc. programme in Integrated Coastal Zone Management. Furthermore, I annually offer a couple of lectures regarding the processing and analysis of physical oceanographic field measurements in the framework of the English-speaking M.Sc. programme "Research in Marine Sciences".
