    Dept. Head's welcome letter

    Drosos Koutsoubas

    Professor

Welcome to the website of the Department of Marine Sciences.

As of 2019, our Department reached the milestone of 20 years of contribution and service to all levels of higher education, as well as active participation in marine research, a sector that is of extreme importance for Greece. The North Aegean was not arbitrarily selected to host the Department of Marine Sciences; it is the region with the highest marine productivity in Greece, where Mediterranean and Black Sea waters converge, while the coastal regions of Lesvos island are rich in abundance and biodiversity.

The faculty’s almost continuous presence, the island’s limited dimensions, the intensely experimental nature of marine studies and the concentration of educational activities in the Department’s premises in Mytilene’s Campus have led to strong and continuous interactions between faculty and students, thus creating a sense of community and personal responsibility. The positive results become readily apparent to the visitor in terms of student involvement and well-maintained premises.

Our graduates contribute in multiple ways to the national economy, including primary production and services sector. Our M.Sc. and Ph.D. alumni work in research and higher education, both in Greece and abroad. The institution of Summer Internships and Erasmus+ exchange programmes contribute to the incorporation of modern trends in Science and market’s demands into our curriculum, while helping our students’ career orientation. Our effort is directed towads our continuous evolution and improvement; the Department aims to become a focal point of Marine Research and Education in the Mediterranean, while contributing to Blue Growth at national and regional level.

    Organizational chart

The Department's Supreme Governing Body is the Assembly, which is in continuous interaction with the Internal Evaluation Group (OMEA). The Assembly takes decisions on all major actions of the Department, over all three cycles of study. The Internal Evaluation Group ensures the quality of the offered education, according to the instructions and advice of the Institution's Evaluation Unit, by making the necessary suggestions to the Assembly. The Coordinating Committees of the three cycles of studies (undergraduate, Masters and Doctoral) are responsible for the smooth operation of the corresponding programmes, making the necessary proposals to the Assembly. Implementation of the Assembly's decisions is the task of the Department Head, the Deputy Dept. Head and the Administration.
