    Outreach

    The Department of Marine Sciences extends its activity way beyong research and education, to contributions in social and financial issues:

    • Intervention to sensitive issues regarding the Marine and Coastal Environment, of interest to the local and wider Greek society, such as:

      • itiniative to coordinate actions of mitigation of the massive Pinna nobilis mortality in 2018-2019 and

      • actions to improve the environmental management of the Gulf of Kalloni, 

    • Public awareness and exchange actions, such as:

      • the Kalloni Gulf Workshop (Kalloni Municipal Theatre, 25 April 2018),

      • the public presentation of the book "The Lagoon - how Aristotle invented Science" by Armand-Marie Leroi, in the Kalloni Municipal Theatre (6 October 2018)

      • the frequent visitations of public schools to our premises,

      • the annual presentation of research field instruments and methods to students of the Experimental Lycaeum of Mytilene, etc.

      • the articles in public electronic, printed or radio/tv press regarding environmental crises like the massive deaths of Pinna nobilis in the Mediterranean.

    Furthermore, the Department seeks to develop cooperations with strategically selected academic and research partners, as well as stakeholder groups:

    • The DMS has already signed a Cooperation Agreement with the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research for cooperation within the project AEGIS.

    • A Special Cooperation Agreement for cotutoring PhD candidates in the framework of the International Doctoral Programme "Environmental Phenomena and Risks (FERIA)" is being finalized with the University of Studies of Napoli "Parthenope", Italy

    • Finally,a Memorandum of cooperation is also being finalized with the Association of Professional Fishermen of Lesvos "Agios Nikolaos"
